           GENERAL QNA    

WHY IS YOUR CONSULT FREE?

The purpose of the consult is to do three things:

1) To flush out what the parameters of the issue are;

2) To clearly articulate what success would look like;

3) To see if our professional chemistry is what we are both looking for.

This kind of work requires a level of honesty, openness, and comfort that is non-negotiable. Proceeding without those in place can dramatically stunt results, and neither of us want that.


The consult is our chance to make sure that all the gears mesh and that there is a mutual understanding of what is expected of both parties. Once in place, the real fun can begin.

CAN I SIGN SOMEBODY ELSE UP FOR A CONSULT?

It depends on what particular service is requested. For sessions with a focus on the imparting of skills such as pranayama, asana, or music, or for sessions with more of an experiential structure like sound meditation, it shouldn't be a problem. But if the intention is to do deeper therapeutic work, then it is an absolute must that the one on the chair is fully on board with proceeding.

DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

I do not work with any insurance companies, but there are a variety of bespoke packages that can be created so that any income level can still receive great benefit from working with The Internal Library. Options for this will be discussed in the Free Consult.

ABOUT HOW LONG DOES A SESSION TYPICALLY LAST?

Usually about 60 - 90 minutes, although this can be amended depending on the uniqueness of the situation.

I ALREADY HAVE A REGULAR THERAPIST/COUNSELOR. WILL WORKING WITH THE INTERNAL LIBRARY CONFLICT WITH THAT?

Most likely the work you are doing with your therapist/counselor and the work you will do with The Internal Library should have no conflict at all. In fact, the two can often accentuate the gems from each approach and you will walk away with a compounding effect of two great results that mutually strengthen one another.

However, there have been a very limited number of cases where the philosophy of another therapist does conflict directly with my approach, and this tends to undermine the benefit from either. If this seems to be the case, we can decide if it is right for us to work together in a different way or if it be wiser to part ways. This can be unpacked in the Free Consult.

DO YOU RECORD YOUR SESSIONS? CAN I HAVE A RECORDING OF THE SESSION?

All sessions are recorded and logged. These recording will not be used for any kind of commercial or public purpose, but merely for the sake of professional liability should any issue ever arise. This is an industry standard.

As far as recordings go, if there are elements of the session that are of particular interest to you that you would like to revisit, I will happily compile notes and/or personalized recordings with superior editing quality that you are welcome to have and reference at will.

DO YOU WORK WITH COUPLES?

It's not a modality I have studied formally, but I have done some work with couples in the past and have seen promising results. Depending on the situation, it may be appropriate for us to work in a couple's-counseling context or I can happily refer you on to another very qualified couple's counselor that I know and respect highly.

 

           Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy QNA    

 
 

I'VE HEARD THAT SOME PEOPLE CAN'T BE HYPNOTIZED. IS THIS TRUE?

Not even a little bit!! Hypnosis is the process of deeply focusing and relaxing the 'critical factor'. This is necessary for any kind of real learning and any kind of real rejuvenation.


To put it in a straightforward way, if you sleep, if you learned a language growing up, if you can remember things that you don't often think about, or if you have ever been engrossed in a show, movie, book, or important conversation, then you know what hypnosis is like. You may not realize it, but hypnosis is a deeply crucial state that is vital to human life as we know it.

That being said, it is certainly true that certain people don't respond well to hypnotists, but that is a different matter entirely. If you are worried that you are not hypnotizable, I can confidently say that this fear will be eliminated by the end of the Free Consult. Everyone is an unconscious expert in being hypnotized. But not everyone is a conscious expert in being hypnotized.

WILL I LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS WHEN IN TRANCE?

Not at all. In fact many people report hypnosis/trance as a state of being "intensely conscious". Trance is an altered state from our normal Beta-brainwave operating system, so it will likely feel different from your day-to-day experience, but you will be able to hear everything I say and you will be able to be fully aware of everything around you as it's happening.

IS HYPNOSIS MIND CONTROL

Yes. But here's the kicker - it's you doing the controlling. My role is to teach you how to leverage the natural state of hypnosis/trance for the purposes we discuss and rehearse beforehand. As you go into trance, I will be there to guide the process, but you are absolutely an active agent the entire time, and you will likely find the experience remarkably satisfying in just how much control you have.

WILL I DIVULGE MY DEEPEST SECRETS WHEN IN TRANCE?

Not unless you want to. If there is something you want to remain private between you and your own mind, there is no way to me to compel you to express it.

CAN I GET STUCK IN HYPNOSIS/TRANCE?

No, definitely not. The worst that will happen is that you might fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed, relaxed, and a bit confused as to where the time went!!

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MOVE "GET OUT"?

Hilarious, witty, entertaining, and VERY misleading about what hypnosis is and what it can be used for. If you're looking for a good thrilling laugh, enjoy!! If you're looking for an insightful exploration into trance and hypnosis, I would pass it up.

 

            Lucid Dreaming QNA    

 
 

WILL LUCID DREAMING MAKE ME MORE TIRED UPON WAKING UP THAN I WOULD HAVE NORMALLY BEEN?

While this worry seems to make a weird kind of sense, I have found (and read) that lucid dreams are almost invariably followed by a sense of elation and joy after their completion, especially if the pre-established goals of the dream are successful. Rest assured, you will still get many hours each night of deep dreamless sleep, and lucidity all but guarantees that any chronic unpleasant dreams will either cease or significantly reduce in frequency and intensity.

I DON'T REMEMBER MY DREAMS. CAN I STILL LEARN THIS SKILL?

Absolutely, but first you will want to develop a skill called "Dream Recall", which is far easier than learning lucid dreaming. This is explained in the Lucid Dreaming Firehose series linked above.

I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING SLEEP PARALYSIS. CAN LUCID DREAMING HELP WITH THAT?

Funnily enough, beginning a Lucid Dreaming practice often begets consistent sleep paralysis. While this phenomenon can be utterly terrifying at first, the solution is incredibly simple - just learn to recognize it for what it is. Once this happens, then it actually becomes on the greatest boons that one could ask for. The hardest part about lucid dreaming is keeping the mind awake while the body sleeps. During sleep paralysis, this has been done for you. All that is left for you to do is visualize a dream and you're off!!

I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING NIGHTMARES. CAN LUCID DREAMING HELP WITH THAT?

This is the preceding cause of many people's entry into lucid Dreaming, including my own. As of now, there is no better method for dealing with nightmares than lucid dreaming. It lets you call the shots in real time AND lets you gain insight into what the nightmare actually means for you.

DO YOU OFFER DREAM INTERPRETATION?

The many arts of dream-interpretation are highly varied and often contradictory. There are an endless and ever-increasing number of voices in this field adding to the conversation. Much of what is said in this space is highly useful, but just as much is merely post-hoc rationalizing noise in the system.


I am always very wary of confident explanations of dreams coming from any source other than one's own mind. A skilled dream interpreter, in my view, will do far less "interpreting" and far more inquiring into what ideas and images mean to you personally, prompting you to make connections spontaneously and organically. The meaning behind your dream must gel with you and your current paradigm of the world.

But, if you really want to know what a dream means, then I have a method will be at the very least very interesting and is almost guaranteed to propel you to deep insight - get lucid, and ask the dream itself what it means. You will get an answer.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MOVIE "INCEPTION".

I love this movie!! While there are some convenient plot devices that don't really square with lucid dreaming as it is experienced by regular practitioners, there is a whole lot of thought-provoking gold in there.


I regularly fantasize about the prospect of technologically enabled dream-sharing, and I hope that we will look back on this movie as a creative precursor to some ground-breaking devices in the future that will allow us to dream mutually. In the mean time, however, the movie is a great ride, albeit a bit misleading at times.

IS THERE SOMETHING I CAN WATCH/LISTEN TO BEFORE WE MEET TO GET ME STARTED?

DOESN'T 'STOIC' MEAN REPRESSING EMOTIONS?

Unfortunately the word 'Stoic' has colloquially come to be synonymous with having a 'stiff upper lip', and gritting one's teeth in the face of suffering. This is not true Stoicism.


In fact, true Stoicism is all about directly engaging with the totality of your experience, including your emotions, which are are very real and important aspect of our minds.


The process is to look right into our experience without hiding away from it, and then calmly and rationally assess what we can control and what we cannot. This is followed by affirming our strengths and accepting our vulnerabilities, and developing a graceful wisdom to navigate between the two. Nowhere in this equation does the repression of emotions become necessary, or even advisable.

IS STOICISM A RELIGION?

While the Stoics were quite religious (in the sense that they had a coherent philosophy of metaphysics, ideas about the totality of the cosmos, and a place for the idea of God), they were primarily a philosophy of pragmatism. As is the case with Buddhism (and many other contemplative religious/philosophical systems), the primary goal is to live virtuously in the world, striving to reduce suffering for ourselves and for our fellow sentient beings.

And, as any real philosopher worth their salt would tell you, all ideas found here should be tested in your own life to ensure their veracity. There is nothing to take on faith in this system other than the belief that you have the inherent capacity to understand your own experience if you pay close attention to it. The rest is built on that fairly straight-forward axiom.

IS CBT COMPATIBLE WITH HYPNOTHERAPY?

The short answer is yes!! They are 100% compatible. I have been amazed at just how compatible these two systems of therapy are.            Self-Authoring Suite QNA    

 
 

IS THIS PROGRAM AN ADDITIONAL/HIDDEN CHARGE?

Not at all!! I will cover the cost of the Self-Authoring Suite.

I'M NOT COMFORTABLE WITH MY WRITING SKILL. DO I HAVE TO BE A GOOD WRITER TO DO THIS PROGRAM?

You do not need to be a gifted or even competent writer to complete this program. It mostly consists of prompts that allow you to riff and expand on ideas, making them more complete and articulated. The writing will later be mined for inspirational gold, but the writing itself is more of a vehicle for clarity rather than a product in and of itself.

DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE THE ENTIRE PROGRAM BEFORE MY FIRST SESSION?

You are more than welcome to!! Some people prefer this, especially if they get into a really strong flow, but it's ok to do parts of it at a time. I would recommend at the very least completing each section before each following session in a series (for example: Past Authoring before first session, Present Authoring before second, and Future Authoring before third), as this will take you through the resolving process that each section concludes with, and not leave you open-ended on any of these topics during our time together.

CAN I COMPLETE THE PROGRAM WITH YOU DURING OUR SESSION?

Yes this is just fine as well!! It all depends on how you feel your time would best be spent. All of this can be discussed in the Free Consult.

 

            Pranayama QNA    

 
 

I'VE HEARD THAT BREATH WORK CAN BE HARMFUL. IS THIS TRUE?

Anything done to excess can be harmful, and this is equally true of a physical practice such as pranayama. Some of the exercise and techniques are quite physically demanding and are difficult to sustain for a long period of time, while others are mellow and soothing and can be done for longer periods. Your intuition will be more than sufficient to deduce if/when you are going overboard, but we can certainly discuss appropriate limits during sessions.

I HAVE A CONDITION THAT INHIBITS MY ABILITY TO BREATHE COMFORTABLY. CAN I STILL DO THIS?

Yes you can still practicing pranayama, although it will change the intention of the exercises and techniques. Pranayama can actually be immensely helpful in recovering from certain breathing impairments, but as always, it would be wise to check with your doctor before taking on a new form of physical exercise (which pranayama would qualify as).

CAN I DO PRANAYAMA ON MY OWN AFTER LEARNING IT WITH YOU IN SESSION?

I hope you do!! Pranayama is the most effective when done daily, and the greatest benefits come when you have mastered the techniques to the point where they don't take much conscious thought. That is when the space in the mind opens and the true power comes in.

 

           Sound Meditation QNA   

 
 

IS THIS A FORM OF 'ENERGY HEALING'?

Not really. Many people who do Energy healing have a fond appreciation for Sound Meditation, but the modalities are distinct. Sound Meditation is more akin to hypnotherapy rather than Energy healing, as the mechanism of action is the mind and the intention established consciously before hand, rather than a subtle current of transcendent energy called in by the therapist and/or client.

That being said, there may very well be 'Sound Healers' (AKA Energy healers that use sound to facilitate their work) who may disagree with my explanation, and they are entitled to their opinion and their perspective. But for our purposes here at The Internal Library, the Sound-centered work we will do will be explicitly meditative, psychological, and physiological. Any other effects will be perks which you are free to enjoy!!

CAN I PLAY THE INSTRUMENTS AS WELL? OR DO I JUST LISTEN?

Typically the session are an I play-you receive style, but I am not in any way opposed to sharing the mallets and strings with those inclined to make sound for themselves. I would recommend dedicating a substantial amount of time to listening and receiving the adjacent psychological practices that come with Sound meditation, but if time permits, all clients interested will be more than welcome to tone and play along side myself. There is great healing in creating as well as receiving.
